AMD is making one of its biggest moves yet against Nvidia, and this goes way beyond selling Anthropic a mountain of GPUs.

The chipmaker has announced a strategic partnership that will put up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series accelerators behind Claude. The first gigawatt is expected to begin deployment during the first half of 2027.

AMD is also committing to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic. Reuters reports that the investment will be tied to deployment milestones, while The Wall Street Journal describes the server agreement itself as being worth tens of billions of dollars.

The headline number is enormous, but the structure of the deal matters more. Anthropic gets another major source of compute at a moment when Claude is expanding far beyond its original developer audience. AMD gets a frontier AI company as a flagship customer, a potential equity stake in that customer, and direct access to Claude across its own engineering operation.

This isn’t a normal vendor contract. AMD and Anthropic are building themselves into each other’s roadmaps.

What Anthropic Is Actually Deploying

Anthropic plans to deploy AMD Helios rack-scale systems built around the Instinct MI455X, part of the upcoming MI450 Series. Each Helios system combines the GPUs with AMD EPYC “Venice” CPUs, Pensando networking, and the ROCm software stack.

That full-stack part matters. AMD isn’t trying to compete with Nvidia by offering a fast accelerator and hoping somebody else solves the rest. Helios packages the compute, networking, processors, and software into a rack-scale platform designed for massive AI training and inference clusters.

Anthropic isn’t starting from zero with AMD, either. According to the announcement, the Claude maker already uses AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs. This agreement takes that relationship from an existing deployment to gigawatt scale.

The first gigawatt is scheduled to begin coming online in the first half of 2027. AMD and Anthropic haven’t provided a deployment date for the remaining capacity.

AMD Is Also Putting Claude to Work

The hardware order will grab the headlines, but the engineering agreement could have longer-lasting consequences.

AMD and Anthropic are launching a multiyear collaboration that will use Claude to optimize workloads for AMD Instinct GPUs and speed up development of ROCm, AMD’s open software platform for GPU computing. AMD also plans to adopt Claude broadly across its engineering and product-development teams.

That gives Anthropic a direct role in improving the software layer surrounding the hardware it’s about to deploy. At the same time, AMD gets one of the industry’s most capable coding and agentic AI systems embedded inside the teams building its future products. Anthropic’s latest Claude Sonnet 5 release pushed near-Opus performance into the lower-cost Sonnet tier, which helps explain why AMD sees value beyond a standard enterprise chatbot rollout.

ROCm has long been the pressure point in AMD’s challenge to Nvidia. Raw hardware performance only gets a chipmaker so far when developers have spent years building around Nvidia’s CUDA ecosystem. Better tools, easier model optimization, and tighter support for real frontier workloads could make Helios much easier to adopt.

Claude helping AMD improve ROCm isn’t a decorative partnership detail. It attacks one of AMD’s biggest competitive problems directly.

Anthropic Doesn’t Want to Depend on One Chip Company

Anthropic already trains and serves Claude across a deliberately mixed hardware fleet that includes Nvidia GPUs, Amazon Trainium accelerators, and Google TPUs.

In April, Anthropic announced an agreement with Amazon for up to 5 gigawatts of new compute, including a commitment to spend more than $100 billion on AWS technologies over ten years. It separately expanded its partnership with Google and Broadcom for multiple gigawatts of next-generation TPU capacity.

The company also secured more than 300 megawatts of Nvidia-based capacity through SpaceX’s Colossus 1 data center.

Now AMD joins that portfolio.

Anthropic’s argument is straightforward: match different workloads to different hardware and avoid becoming completely dependent on one supplier. That’s especially important when AI companies are fighting over chips, data-center space, networking equipment, and electricity at the same time. It also matters as new export restrictions reshape where advanced Nvidia hardware can be sold.

The AMD deal doesn’t replace Anthropic’s relationships with Amazon, Google, or Nvidia. It makes the infrastructure underneath Claude even more distributed.

AMD’s Nvidia Challenge Is Becoming a Real Platform Fight

AMD has spent the past year collecting exactly the customers it needs to make Helios credible.

OpenAI previously agreed to deploy up to 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs, beginning with a 1-gigawatt MI450 deployment in the second half of 2026. OpenAI is also building its own Jalapeño inference chip with Broadcom, another sign that frontier labs don’t want their entire future tied to one silicon supplier.

Meta signed its own agreement for up to 6 gigawatts. That commitment fits a much larger infrastructure strategy, with Zuckerberg also preparing Meta Compute as a cloud business for AI capacity and hosted models. Oracle plans to launch a public AI supercluster with an initial 50,000 MI450 Series GPUs, and Microsoft announced this week that Azure will deploy Helios at scale.

Anthropic adds another frontier-model developer to that list, but there’s a new ingredient here: AMD isn’t only supplying the infrastructure. It’s investing directly in the company consuming it.

The pattern is clear. AMD is using large, multiyear partnerships to establish Helios as a credible alternative to Nvidia’s rack-scale AI systems. It’s also aligning product roadmaps and software development with the companies running the world’s largest AI workloads.

Nvidia still holds the dominant position in AI accelerators and has the stronger software ecosystem. This agreement doesn’t erase that advantage. It does show that the biggest AI labs aren’t willing to let one supplier control all of their future capacity.

That’s the opening AMD needs.

What Happens Next

AMD announced the deal one day before CEO Lisa Su is scheduled to deliver the company’s Advancing AI 2026 keynote in San Francisco. The keynote begins July 23 at 9:30 a.m. Pacific, and AMD is already pointing viewers toward the event for more details.

Several major questions remain unanswered. AMD hasn’t disclosed the exact schedule for its future investment in Anthropic, the milestones attached to it, or when the second gigawatt of capacity will be deployed. The companies also haven’t said how much of the infrastructure Anthropic will operate directly versus leasing through cloud and neocloud providers.

Those details will determine how quickly this turns into revenue for AMD and usable capacity for Anthropic.

For now, the strategic picture is already visible. Anthropic is locking down the compute it needs to keep Claude at the frontier. AMD is turning Helios from a promised Nvidia alternative into infrastructure ordered by OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle, and now Anthropic.

The $5 billion investment is the eye-catching number. The deeper story is that AMD has secured a place inside Claude’s infrastructure while putting Claude inside AMD’s own development process.

That’s a much tighter partnership than simply buying chips.
