Instagram iPad App Finally in the Works, Meta Confirms

After years of complaints and feature requests, a native Instagram iPad app is finally on the way. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Meta employees are currently testing a version of the app optimized for iPadOS. If all goes well, the official launch could happen by the end of 2025.

Instagram for iPad Coming Soon?

Instagram has been one of the most glaring holdouts when it comes to native iPad support. While users have been able to run the iPhone version on iPads for years, the experience has always been a clunky workaround, lacking proper scaling, layout optimization, and multitasking support.

Meta’s decision to greenlight an iPad version seems to follow a shift in strategy. Earlier this year, the company rolled out WhatsApp for iPad, marking the first time it expanded one of its major mobile apps beyond the iPhone-only model. The Instagram iPad app appears to be the next logical step.

Interestingly, there’s still no sign of an iPad app for Threads, Meta’s Twitter-like platform. But with growing demand for tablet-optimized social apps—especially among creators—it’s possible that more announcements are on the way.

A native Instagram app would finally give iPad users full access to features like Stories, Reels, and DMs in a format that takes advantage of the larger screen. It’s unclear whether the iPad app will include additional multitasking features or keyboard shortcuts, but the fact that Meta is actively testing it is already a big leap forward.

No official release date has been confirmed, but Gurman says the team is aiming for a launch later this year unless something derails the timeline. After a decade of waiting, the finish line finally seems to be in sight for iPad users who just want to scroll in peace.
