OpenAI Passes One Billion Users. The Price Cuts Worked.

OpenAI now has more than one billion users and two million businesses using its AI models. The numbers landed in the same week the company cut prices on GPT-5.6 Luna and Terra. They’re not a coincidence.

OpenAI said “When the cost of useful intelligence falls, more work becomes worth doing.” That’s the whole strategy in one line. OpenAI is betting that cheaper models pull in enough new users and businesses. The goal is funding the next round of research and infrastructure.

I covered the price cuts earlier this week. The billion users milestone is the first real evidence the bet is landing.

What one billion users actually means

One billion users makes ChatGPT one of the most-used software products on the planet. The two million businesses using OpenAI’s models matter more for the API war. Business usage is where the revenue is. It’s also where the competition is sharpest.

The timing says a lot. OpenAI cut GPT-5.6 Luna by 80% and GPT-5.6 Terra by 20% days before announcing the user numbers. Luna now costs $0.20 per million input tokens. At those prices, adoption is the point. Margin comes later, or it comes from the flagship models.

Why OpenAI is pushing this hard

The milestone is real, but it’s also defensive. ChatGPT is no longer the clear front-runner in the AI race. Anthropic’s private-market valuation is now higher. Business customers have started to push back on AI costs. Sam Altman said earlier this year that pricing had become an increasingly big issue among customers.

The Journal reported in June that OpenAI had been weighing price cuts for weeks. Management worried about Anthropic lowering the cost of its Claude models. The billion users announcement reads like the opening move in that fight, not the end of it.

What I’m watching

The number to watch isn’t the user count. It’s what the price cuts do to the API market. If Luna at $0.20 per million tokens pulls in a wave of new builders, OpenAI’s volume bet works. If it just compresses margins for everyone, the one billion users story gets harder to fund.

Either way, the AI price war just got a scoreboard. And for now, OpenAI is winning it on volume. Whether that holds depends on how many of those billion users turn into paying ones.
