Sam Altman confirmed it late Tuesday night. GPT-5.6 Sol launches Thursday.
He posted that GPT-5.6 Sol launches Thursday and to keep building.
That’s July 9, 2026.
Sol is the flagship model in OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 family. It’s the one Sam said was smart, efficient, and a significant step forward when he first announced the lineup last week. It sits alongside Terra (5.5-level performance at half the price) and Luna (the lightweight option).
What’s notable here is the rollout itself won’t be a typical wide launch. GPT-5.6 is subject to a staggered, government-approved release under the June 2 executive order on frontier AI deployment. OpenAI is doing customer-by-customer government approval. I covered what that actually means here.
So Thursday is the date Sol starts reaching approved customers. The rest of us will get access as the approval pipeline clears.
A few things still unclear: – Whether Sol hits API and ChatGPT simultaneously or staggered – Whether the full Terra and Luna rollout follows the same cadence – Pricing, beyond what was shared in the initial preview
Bottom line: Thursday is the marker. GPT-5.6 Sol starts shipping July 9. If you’re in the approval pipeline, watch your dashboard. If you’re not, expect to wait a bit longer.
