iOS 27 is the biggest iPhone software update in years.
Not a “performance and bug fixes” year. Apple rebuilt Siri from the ground up. It added three AI-powered photo editing tools. It overhauled parental controls. It threaded AI through Safari, Camera, Mail, and Messages.
Some of it runs on every iPhone 11 and up. Most of the good stuff needs an iPhone 15 Pro or later.
Here is everything new in iOS 27, what actually matters, and what you can use on your phone, based on Apple’s official preview.
Siri AI: Apple Finally Built a Real Chatbot
This is the story of iOS 27. Apple killed the old Siri and replaced it with a full ChatGPT-style chatbot with a dedicated app.
The Siri app is a dark interface where you can type or talk to Siri. Conversation history is saved and searchable. You can delete it automatically after a set period. Apple finally treats Siri conversations like real chat threads, not one-off voice commands.
The big upgrades:
Personal context. Siri can search your Messages, Mail, Photos, and Calendar to answer questions. “What did Sarah say about dinner plans?” “Find the photo of my dog from last summer.” It works because Apple processes everything on-device or via Private Cloud Compute.
On-screen awareness. Tell Siri to “send this to Mom” while looking at a recipe or a product page. It knows what is on your screen and acts on it.
Web knowledge. Siri can now answer questions from the web in real time. Recipe lookups. Recommendations. News queries. It is not just pulling from a stale knowledge graph anymore.
Write with Siri. You can generate drafts anywhere you type. Messages, Notes, Mail. Siri writes, you edit. It is Apple’s version of Compose in ChatGPT.
The catch: Siri AI ships as a beta. You need to join the waitlist to use it. And it only runs on iPhone 15 Pro or later. My full Siri AI deep dive covers everything it does and what it still can’t do.
AI Photo Editing: Reframe, Extend, Clean Up
Apple added three AI-powered photo editing tools that genuinely change how you edit photos on iPhone.
Spatial Reframing lets you change the composition of a photo after you take it. You touch-drag to recompose, and AI fills the gaps. Works on old photos and photos taken on other cameras, not just iPhone shots.
Extend expands the edges of an image. Perfect for fixing a cropped horizon or changing an aspect ratio after the fact. You get a wider frame, AI generates the missing content.
Clean Up got a major upgrade. It can now remove larger objects and handle more complex scenes. The infill is noticeably better than the iOS 26 version.
All three process through Private Cloud Compute. Apple’s privacy pitch: the photo leaves your device encrypted, gets processed on Apple silicon servers, never gets stored. It is a better story than Google’s cloud processing.

Safari AI: Tab Groups, Notify Me, and Extensions
Safari got three AI-powered features that quietly make it one of the best mobile browsers.
Auto Tab Groups. Safari now groups your open tabs by topic automatically. Shopping tabs in one group. Work tabs in another. Travel tabs in a third. If you are a person with 57 open tabs, this alone is worth the update.
Notify Me. This is the feature nobody knew they needed. You can monitor any web page for changes. Price drops on a product page. Restock notifications. Content changes on a blog. Safari sends you a push alert when something changes. It is a better shopping companion than most dedicated deal tracker apps.
Custom extensions. Safari now supports custom extensions with finer-grained permissions. Not as exciting day-one, but it opens the door for real browser extension ecosystem on iPhone.

Parental Controls: The Overhaul Parents Actually Needed
Apple completely overhauled Screen Time and parental controls. This is the biggest update to child safety features since Screen Time launched.
Child accounts now have a guided setup flow with age-based app recommendations. You can hand a kid an iPhone and get it locked down in minutes.
Ask to Browse. When a child tries to visit a new website in Safari, it sends you a Message asking for approval. Works in all WebKit browsers. It is the feature that should have existed years ago.
Time Allowances. You can set daily limits by category. Entertainment gets two hours. Games get one hour. Social gets 30 minutes. Apple provides age-based recommendations so you do not have to guess.
Daily Schedules. You can define which apps are available at which times of day. School hours are study-only. Evening is entertainment. Bedtime is nothing.
Communication Safety now blocks gore and violence in addition to nudity. Expanded to all WebKit browsers, not just Messages.

Everything Else Worth Knowing
Liquid Glass slider. The translucent design language from iOS 26 got a transparency slider in Settings. You can dial it from ultra-clear to fully tinted. Improved readability, brighter highlights, sharper icons. Apple finally listened to the feedback.
Camera Siri Mode. There is a new Siri mode in the Camera app alongside Photo, Video, and Portrait. Point at something and ask Siri about it. Identify plants. Scan nutrition labels into Health. Scan business cards into Contacts. It overlaps with Google Lens, but the Health integration is genuinely novel.
Health App. Cycle Tracking now detects perimenopause patterns and sends notifications for users 40 and older. You can log symptoms like hot flashes and fatigue. Fitness+ added related workouts. All on-device processing, no data sent to Apple.
Performance. Apple claims app launches are 30 percent faster. Photo loading is 70 percent faster. AirDrop transfers are 80 percent faster. I will benchmark these when the final release ships in September.
AirPods Pro 3. Custom EQ and GymKit support if you have the new AirPods.
iCloud Shared Albums. Full resolution uploads and cross-platform sharing. No more compression.
Passwords app. Now alerts you to weak and compromised passwords with a one-tap fix.
Apple Intelligence in Messages and Mail. Contextual suggestions when writing. Smart replies. Summary snippets.
Compatibility: What Works on Your Phone
iOS 27 runs on iPhone 11 and newer. But Apple Intelligence features are locked to iPhone 15 Pro and later.
Here is the breakdown:
- iOS 27 base OS: iPhone 11 through iPhone 18. Works for everyone.
- Apple Intelligence features (Siri AI, AI Photo Editing, Safari AI, Camera Siri Mode, AI in Messages/Mail): iPhone 15 Pro or later. This is the big gate.
- GPS/cellular features: iPhone 16 or later.
- Siri voice customization: iPhone 17 Pro or later.
If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 16, you get almost everything. If you are on an iPhone 11 through 15 (non-Pro), you get the operating system updates and parental controls but miss the AI features.

The Bottom Line
iOS 27 is the biggest iPhone update since the iPhone launched. No hyperbole.
Siri AI alone is Apple’s most consequential software move in a decade. Apple laid out the full picture at WWDC 2026. The photo editing tools are genuinely useful. The parental controls fix problems parents have been complaining about for years.
But there is a catch. Most of the headline features need a $1,000+ phone from the last two years. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or later, iOS 27 is a free supercomputer upgrade. If you are on an iPhone 11 through 15, you get a better Safari and better parental controls but miss the AI party.
