Apple’s New AirPods Max 2 Just Hit 9 on Amazon, and It’s an All-Time Low

Apple’s new AirPods Max 2 just hit $399 on Amazon, down from the $549 MSRP. That’s $150 off and the lowest price we’ve seen since launch. All five colors are reportedly at the deal price, per 9to5Toys.

This is the move if you’ve been holding out for Apple’s flagship over-ear headphones at a price that doesn’t make you wince.

Let me walk through what’s actually new, who this is for, and whether $399 is the real floor or if you should wait for Prime Day.

What’s actually new on AirPods Max 2

The original AirPods Max launched in December 2020 at $549, and Apple hasn’t refreshed them since. Five years is a long time to wait. Here’s what the second generation actually brings to the table.

The H2 chip. Apple’s H2 has been the brains behind AirPods Pro 2 and the AirPods 4 lineup. It moves to the over-ear form factor here, and the difference is real.

Apple says it delivers “improved high-fidelity audio with deep bass, expansive mids, and crisp highs.” The original AirPods Max sounded great. The Max 2 is reportedly a meaningful step up.

1.5x more active noise cancellation. That’s Apple’s claim versus the first gen.

If it holds in real-world testing, the Max 2 jumps to the front of the ANC pack alongside the Sony WH-1000XM5 and Bose QuietComfort.

The Max 1 was already strong on noise cancellation. 1.5x is a serious claim.

Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Transparency mode. All three of Apple’s situational awareness tricks show up here. Adaptive Audio blends ANC and Transparency automatically based on your environment. Conversation Awareness drops your music volume when you start talking. Transparency lets outside sound in when you need it.

Live Translation via Apple Intelligence. This is the headline new feature. Press and hold the listening mode button on the right ear cup and the Max 2 will translate what someone is speaking in real time through your iPhone’s Apple Intelligence pipeline.

Works in both directions for supported languages. If you travel internationally, deal in foreign-language content, or just want to eavesdrop on your Korean drama without subtitles, this is the killer feature.

USB-C and lossless audio. The first AirPods Max got USB-C in a 2024 silent refresh. The Max 2 keeps USB-C and adds full lossless audio support when wired to a compatible source. That’s a real upgrade for anyone who cares about bit-perfect audio.

Same industrial design. Apple didn’t redesign the chassis. You get the same knit-mesh canopy, memory foam ear cushions, aluminum ear cups, and telescoping arms.

If you liked the look of the first gen, you’ll like the Max 2. If you wanted something lighter, Apple didn’t deliver. The Max 2 is still a heavy headphone at 386 grams.

Who this deal is for

Buy now if:

  • You’re already in the Apple ecosystem with an iPhone 15 Pro, 16, 17, or any M-series iPad/Mac and you want the Live Translation feature to actually work. It needs Apple Intelligence running on a capable device.
  • You want premium over-ear headphones and you prioritize ANC, build quality, and Apple integration over price.
  • The original AirPods Max tempted you but $549 was too steep. At $399, the math gets a lot easier.
  • You’re buying a gift for someone with an iPhone. The Max 2 is the most premium-feeling Apple audio product on the market.

Skip or wait if:

  • You already own the first AirPods Max. The Max 2 is a meaningful upgrade on ANC, audio, and features, but $399 is a lot to spend on a generational refresh if your original pair still works fine.
  • You don’t own an Apple Intelligence-capable device. Live Translation and most of the smart features need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. Otherwise you’re paying premium prices for premium hardware with limited smart features.
  • You’re not committed to Apple. Sony and Bose deliver comparable or better ANC at lower prices, with full Android support and longer battery life. The Sony WH-1000XM6 (when it lands) and Bose QuietComfort Ultra are the direct competitors.
  • You want something lighter for working out or commuting. The Max 2 is heavy. AirPods Pro 3 at $179 is a better everyday carry for most people.

Price check

The original AirPods Max sat at $549 for almost five years. The only meaningful discount we ever saw was during Prime Day 2024, when they briefly dipped to $399 in limited colors and sold out fast.

The old 1st gen AirPods Max deal at $449 was the second-best price we tracked in 2025. The Max 2 launching at $549 and dropping to $399 in two weeks is a real move.

It’s $150 below MSRP and tied with the all-time Prime Day low on the previous generation.

Prime Day 2026 runs July 8-11. There’s a real chance the Max 2 drops another $30-$50 during the event. But you also risk stock running out early if this deal pulls demand forward the way 9to5Toys is suggesting.

If $399 fits your budget, this is a solid buy now. If you’re willing to wait and watch, Prime Day might shave off a bit more. Either way, this isn’t a “wait and see” situation at full MSRP. $399 is the real price to act on.
