Meta AI is done waiting around for prompts.
Meta just announced a major expansion that turns its assistant into something much closer to a full AI agent. Powered by Muse Spark 1.1, the Meta AI agent can now connect to email and calendar apps, make plans, conduct research, create presentations, and handle recurring tasks on a user's behalf.
The important part isn't that Meta AI can answer more questions. It's that the assistant can now follow through on work after the conversation ends.
That puts Meta directly into the agent race alongside ChatGPT Work, Gemini, Claude, and a growing field of specialized tools competing to become the operating layer for everyday digital work.
Meta AI Can Now Make Plans and Carry Them Out
According to Meta's announcement, Muse Spark 1.1 was built to plan, work with connected apps, and complete tasks from beginning to end.
Meta says users can describe what they need once, then let the assistant handle the remaining steps without being repeatedly reminded or re-prompted.
One example involves training for a half marathon. Meta AI can build a week-by-week running plan, adjust the schedule around a user's availability, and deliver the next portion of the plan every Monday morning.
Another example asks the assistant to plan a birthday dinner. Meta AI can search for restaurants, check the user's calendar for a night that works, and suggest options based on the available dates.
For a home renovation project, Meta says the assistant can learn a user's style, search Facebook Marketplace for furniture and fixtures within a budget, and assemble the results into a mood board.
These aren't isolated answers. Each example requires the assistant to combine planning, personal context, external information, and multiple actions into a single workflow.
Email and Calendar Connections Bring Personal Context
Meta AI can now connect to email and calendar apps, although Meta's announcement doesn't yet provide a complete public list of supported providers.
Those connections allow the assistant to create a daily briefing based on the user's schedule. It can identify upcoming appointments, notice when someone is double-booked, flag changed plans, and produce a summary at a preferred time.
This is where the feature becomes significantly more useful, and significantly more sensitive.
An assistant that understands your calendar can do more than answer a generic scheduling question. It can make recommendations based on when you're actually available. Connecting email could provide even more context for travel plans, events, projects, and other responsibilities.
Meta hasn't fully detailed how granular those permissions will be, which actions will require confirmation, or how users will review the assistant's activity across connected services. Those details will matter before anyone hands Meta AI broad access to a primary inbox or calendar.
Recurring Tasks Only Need to Be Set Up Once
The new Meta AI can also handle tasks on a recurring schedule.
Meta says users can ask for a weekly meal plan, notifications about upcoming sneaker releases, or an afternoon briefing about topics they follow. Once the task is configured, Meta AI will continue delivering the requested result at the chosen time.
That changes the relationship from a chatbot that responds when summoned into an assistant that can keep working on an ongoing basis.
Recurring tasks are already becoming a major battleground across AI platforms because they give an assistant persistence. The system is no longer useful only during an active conversation. It can watch the clock, revisit a goal, and bring the result back later.
For ordinary users, this may be more meaningful than another jump in benchmark scores. A model doesn't need to solve impossible math problems to be valuable if it reliably notices a scheduling conflict before you do.
Meta AI Can Research Topics and Generate Slides
Meta is also expanding the assistant's research capabilities.
Meta AI can gather information from across the web, research papers, and content shared by creators and communities across Meta's apps. It can synthesize that information into a report and turn the findings into a presentation or slide deck.
Users can steer the work while it's being generated. Instead of waiting for the assistant to finish and then asking it to start over, they can tell it to change focus, adjust the tone, or remove a section while the task is still underway.
The assistant will course-correct and continue building the output.
Meta also says completed projects, including reports, training schedules, presentations, and mood boards, will be stored in one place so users can return to them, continue editing, or share them with other people.
That gives Meta AI the beginnings of a persistent workspace rather than a disposable chat history.
Facebook Marketplace Is Meta's Secret Weapon
Several of these features already exist in some form across competing AI products.
ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and specialized research tools can all conduct web research, create documents, and work with connected services. Scheduled tasks and app integrations are quickly becoming standard features rather than experimental extras.
Meta's advantage is the ecosystem surrounding the assistant. The company has already been expanding that ecosystem through releases such as Muse Image, its first image-generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs.
Facebook Marketplace gives Meta AI direct access to a huge collection of local and commercial listings. Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and WhatsApp give it access to public conversations, creators, communities, and billions of potential users.
That means Meta doesn't necessarily need to convince people to adopt an entirely new productivity platform. It can place agent capabilities inside services they already use every day.
Meta says the new features are beginning to roll out in select markets through the Meta AI app and Meta.ai. The company plans to expand them to more countries and additional surfaces, including WhatsApp, in the coming weeks.
An AI agent inside WhatsApp could have a dramatically different adoption curve from an agent that requires users to discover, download, and learn a separate application.
The Privacy Questions Are About to Get Bigger
Meta says users can choose how they interact with the assistant and can use Incognito chats when they want a private conversation.
That's useful, but Incognito chat doesn't answer every question created by connected apps and persistent tasks.
Users will need clear information about what data Meta AI can read, what it retains, whether connected-app information is used for training or personalization, and how easily permissions can be revoked. They'll also need visible records of what the agent did and why it did it.
The more capable an agent becomes, the less acceptable a vague permissions screen becomes.
Connecting a calendar to identify an open evening is relatively straightforward. Allowing an assistant to read email, monitor ongoing tasks, make recommendations, and operate without repeated prompts creates a much larger trust boundary.
Meta will need to prove that its controls are as serious as the capabilities it's shipping.
Meta AI Is Becoming Much More Than a Chatbot
Meta describes this release as another step toward "personal superintelligence," its vision for an AI that understands a user's context and handles tasks on their behalf.
The phrase is enormous. The product direction underneath it is much easier to understand.
Meta AI is becoming an agent that can remember responsibilities, connect to personal services, produce finished work, and return with results without being chased down for every next step.
The individual features may not be unique, but Meta's distribution absolutely is.
If these capabilities spread across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, Threads, and Meta's AI glasses, Meta could put an everyday AI agent in front of billions of people without asking them to change where they already spend their time.
The AI agent war just moved out of the lab and into the family group chat.
